Why searches fall apart without tracking
A job search is a lot of small, similar tasks executed over weeks. You apply to a role on Monday, hear nothing, find three more postings on Wednesday, and by Friday you can't remember which company asked for a portfolio or who promised to reply "early next week". Spreadsheets and inbox folders work for a fortnight and then quietly stop being updated, which is exactly when a follow-up would have mattered most.
What the Application Tracker does
Every application is a row with the details you'll need later: company, job title, job URL, location, work type, salary, date applied, an optional interview date and time, and notes. Each one sits in a status — Saved, Preparing, Applied, Interview, Second Interview, Offer, Rejected, or Withdrawn — with counts per status and filters above the list, plus a search across company, title, and location. Your dashboard pulls the same data together, so the state of the search is visible the moment you log in.
How to keep it worth maintaining
- Log the application the day you send it. The record is only useful if it's complete, and the details are freshest within a minute of applying.
- Write notes for your future self. Who you spoke to, what they promised, what you said you'd send — this is the part that pays off before the second interview.
- Move status honestly. "Applied" that's really "saved for later" hides the thing you need to do today.
- Review weekly. Anything Applied for more than two weeks with no reply is a candidate for one polite follow-up — then let it go.
- Close the loop. Mark rejections and withdrawals instead of letting them linger. A clean list is a clearer head.
An honest expectation about follow-ups
A tracker tells you where things stand; it can't make an employer reply. Employers are often slow, and silence is usually process, not rejection. What tracking gives you is the ability to follow up once, on time, with context — and to stop wondering which of the eleven roles you're still waiting on.
